Education for the Emerging Adult

Dr. Maria Montessori recognized that the stage of adolescence, as for all of the previous developmental stages, required a unique educational environment and method of teaching to bring about the greatest potential in the student.

Infants, up until around age 6, work primarily on developing their individual sense of self. The 6-to-12-year-old develops their social self — shown by a great love for collaboration. The 12-to-18-year-old works on integrating the individual self within the social context — in essence, preparing for life as an adult in society — coupled with the tremendous physical and emotional shift of this time.

Real Work, Real Skills

At KMSchool, we provide adolescents the opportunity to develop concrete skills they can take into adult life — conflict resolution, budgeting and finance, and practical-life skills (food preservation, gardening, time management, research, communication, and presentation) — alongside a rigorous academic program. As much as possible, we explore topics within a practical context that demonstrates their real-world application.

We might do math in the garden, develop poetry about the perils and triumphs of scientific development, and act out the lives of historical figures. By using their ‘head, hands, and heart,’ adolescents are more engaged, retain more of what they learn, and develop a larger view of the world — and the important contribution they can make.
